Would you like to offer your time and talent for one week this summer, promoting peace and having fun with children? A search is underway to fill positions for Teachers and Interns for Young Peacemakers Week, August 19-23, 2024 (see job descriptions below).
At Young Peacemakers Week, children, teenagers, and adults come together in a community of peace, where compassion, cooperation and communication are put into practice. Staff and volunteers teach and support peacemaking through cooperative games, art, music, drama, and a variety of other camp activities. The goal of Young Peacemakers Week is to create a positive and fun environment that supports a commitment to peace, inside and out. The program will take place at the Albany Friends Meeting House, 727 Madison Ave., Albany, from 1:30PM-5:30PM, with early drop-off from 12:30-1:30, and family activity and meal from 5:30PM-6:30PM. The maximum enrollment will be 22 children, entering grades 2-8 in September of 2024.
Qualified candidates will reflect “a commitment to nonviolence and reconciliation in all spheres of life”, in keeping with the Quaker Peace Testimony. They will participate in the creation of a community of mutual respect, equality, care for the environment, and spiritual growth. They should be comfortable working within a setting that reflects diversity. All staff and volunteers will be role models for living peacefully together. Creative and nurturing individuals are encouraged to join the Young Peacemakers team!

Position Descriptions
Teacher (application form) Teachers support the Director in the daily operations of the program. Specific duties are assigned according to the variety of specific needs. Teachers will have multiple opportunities to lend their own unique strengths and talents to working with the children and enriching the program.
Skills Needed:
Ability to engage cooperatively with young people, staff and volunteers
Ability to treat a diverse group of people with dignity and respect
Ability to support all staff, including interns, in their learning processes
Ability to be a team player
Ability to be flexible and proactive in decision making
Ability to organize and be organized
Ability to draw in young people who may be reluctant or resistant to participate
Job Duties:
Work with an intern to lead or support activities of small groups of 7-12 children
Support or lead large group activities of up to 22 children
Assist with curriculum development when needed
Handle potential conflicts among children with peaceful and non-violent strategies
Give guidance to interns on developing and conducting program activities as needed
Attend training prior to program week
Attend daily feedback and planning sessions with staff and volunteers
Communicate with parents, caretakers, or drivers of young people
Maintain a safe and healthy environment
Assist the director, volunteers, and staff, in program management and operations
Supervise children on backyard playground equipment
Guide and supervise children when off-site, such as during walks to the park
Be a role model for peaceful conflict resolution
Stipend: $750
Intern (application form) High School and College age Interns will assist and support the activities and operations of the program. They will receive specific training and support, in order to gain the skills and abilities needed to be creative and active participants in a peaceful community. Interns will be working to generate and maintain the qualities listed above under “Skills Needed." and "Job Duties.”
